What People Get Wrong
The Founders wrote the Second Amendment in 1789. They had just won a war against a government that tried to confiscate their weapons.
It is in the Federalist Papers. The Founders were explicit: the right to bear arms exists because a free people must be able to resist a tyrannical government, alone or in concert.
The Second Amendment is not about duck hunting. It is not about sport. It is about whether the American citizen has any mechanism of last resort against a government that has lost its consent of the governed.
The Personal Piece
My first firearm was a 12-gauge pump-action shotgun my father gave me when I was fourteen. We went to a gravel pit outside Lubbock and he showed me how to aim at a clay disk. Missed most of them. He did not care. The point was understanding what the thing was for.
It is for the moment when every other option has been exhausted. When the police cannot come fast enough. When the state has made its choice and you need to make yours.
