The Numbers Nobody Reports

April 2026 CBP encounter data: 178,041. That number is not small. April 2025 was 198,667. The Administration posture has produced a reduction. Down is good. Down to triple pre-2021 is not solved.

The breakdown nobody puts in charts: first-time encounters versus returns. When you strip returns and duplicates, the actual unique first-time crossers in April ran about 127,000.

The headline number makes the border look worse than it is. The real number is still triple what it was. Both things are true simultaneously. The press chooses the frame that serves its narrative over the frame that serves accuracy.

The fentanyl numbers are where it gets clinical. CBP seized 2,874 pounds of fentanyl in April. 94 percent of that seized at legal ports of entry, not between them. The cartels ship through legitimate commercial channels.

The Mexican Cartel Business Model

The cartels do not move drugs across the desert. They move people. The drugs move through commercial channels the cartels tax. A kilo of fentanyl sold wholesale in Arizona goes for $8,000. The cartel taxes it at $500 per kilo at the border crossing. They do not touch the product. They touch the pipeline.
